Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium (TE) and chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) occurs as a result of dietary deficiencies, crash diets, high-grade fevers, anaemia, blood loss, hormonal imbalances and pregnancy etc. The word telogen is known as the resting phase of hair and effluvium means letting loose. Telogen effluvium [TE] is a form of non-scarring alopecia characterized by an acute and generalised loss of hair. In most cases, TE recovers spontaneously within 6 months however if the hair loss persists for more than 6 months, it is known as chronic telogen effluvium [CTE.], which is more difficult to treat and may lead to permanent hair loss.

When excessive amounts of hair simultaneously switch from anagen (growth) into telogen (dormancy) and subsequently shed several months later, the phenomenon is referred to as a telogen effluvium. Telogen effluviums can be acute or chronic. When the shedding lasts more than six months or persistently recurs, it is referred to as a chronic telogen effluvium. Chronic telogen effluviums have been reported mainly in women. Chronic telogen effluvium was first reported at a conference (Alopecia, Washington DC, November 1996) and later published as a newly identified diffuse form of hair loss in women Very rarely has chronic telogen effluvium been reported in men. Unlike other types of telogen effluvium, the initial onset can be quite sudden. This form of hair loss can gradually become quite extensive, all over scalp and known as permanent changes.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune disease that results in hair loss on the scalp and any other parts of the body. It occurs in males and females of all ages but most often the onset can be seen in childhood. This common but very challenging and capricious disease affects approximately 1.7 percent of the world population and can have a profound effect on one’s physical and emotional state. Alopecia areata usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).

What are the triggers or causes of alopecia areata ?

It’s yet not perfectly understood what causes alopecia areata. For some reason, follicles stop producing visible hair, resulting in smooth bald patches that can appear overnight. Researchers are trying to determine what triggers the disease, and whether it’s from within the body or from environmental factors. There are no diagnostic tests available which can predict the onset and behavior of alopecia areata. However there may be some hereditary factors which play a roll in hair loss, in about 20% of cases people with alopecia areata have a family member who are also affected. Below area few common factors which are known as a trigger for Alopecia areata.

• Genetic tendencies

• Long illness

• Thyroid dysfunction

• Local skin disease

• Environmental triggers

• Exposure to chemicals

• Extreme Stress

• Pregnancy

• Medicines

• Nutritional deficiency

• Vaccines

What are the symptoms of alopecia areata? How it may progress ?

The typical pattern is one or more bald patches appear on the scalp or any other part of the body. These tend to be around in shape, and about the size of a large coin. A Family member, friend, or hairdresser may be the first person to notice the bare patch or patches. Apart from the hairless patch, the scalp usually looks healthy. In few cases, the patient may feel redness, scaling, mild burning, or a slight itchy feeling on an affected part. Quite often the bald patch or patches re-grow hair within a few months. If hair grows back it may not have its primary color and looks grey or white. The original color eventually returns after several months. Sometimes, the initial hairless patch re-grows hair whilst a new bare patch is developing. Often several small hairless patches develop and merge into a larger bald area. Patches on body hair, beard, eyebrows, or eyelashes can be seen in some cases. Large bald patches develop in some people. Whole scalp hair loss is known as alopecia totalis and complete body hair loss is known as alopecia universalis. The nails are affected in about 1 in five cases and can become pitted or ridged. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. Alopecia areata behaves in a different way in everyone. However below are the classifications of how it may progress.

Thyroid Dysfunction

Thyroid dysfunction and reproductive health

Thyroid disease is a common condition in the reproductive medicine setting due to the complex interhypothalamicn the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and the thyroid gland. Abnormalities in thyroid function, including hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, can have an adverse effect on reproductive health and result in reduced rates of conception, increased early pregnancy loss, and adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. There is increasing evidence for the role of autoantibodies in subfertility and early pregnancy loss, even in euthyroid women. Evidence suggests that treating thyroid disorders and keeping thyroid-stimulating hormone levels at the lower end of normal in euthyroid women may improve conception rates in subfertile women and reduce early pregnancy loss.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of any drug to treat any disease. But to most people, the word chemotherapy means drugs used for cancer treatment. It’s often shortened to “chemo.”

Surgery and radiation therapy remove, kill, or damage cancer cells in a certain area, but chemo can work throughout the whole body. This means chemo can kill cancer cells that have spread (metastasized) to parts of the body far away from the original (primary) tumor.

All cancer treatments causes temporary hair loss where men and women go shiny bald look which can be instantly changed by Non Surgical hair implant by giving full head of hair in just 60 mins !!!

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is a disorder characterized by the non-cosmetic pulling of hair, resulting in significant hair loss. The name is derived from the Greek terms for hair (trich), pulling (tillo), and morbid impulse (mania). Trichotillomania occurs more frequently in women and is commonly associated with considerable distress.

Hair is most commonly pulled from the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, and pubic area, though hair from any part of the body may be pulled. Hair pulling may be transient, episodic or continuous and its intensity can fluctuate. Weeks and months may pass with a person being nearly or completely free of hair pulling, only to have a sudden and unexplained recurrence. Like any condition, there is a range of severity. For some, hair loss may be minimal, for others, cosmetic damage may be extensive, even to the point of total baldness.

What prompts individuals with trichotillomania to pull out their hair?

There are many specific experiences that can lead to individual episodes of hair pulling. Troublesome emotions like anxiety, tension, anger, and sadness may increase the tendency to pull hair. Hair pulling typically occurs during sedentary and contemplative activities during which the hands are free and the mind is otherwise occupied. Hair is often pulled absentmindedly, while involved in another activity like reading, talking on the telephone, driving or watching television. There may also be times of the day when the risk of pulling is greater. Many people pull in the evening and late at night when they are alone, tired, or trying to fall asleep.
